‘90s kids lived a life of simplicity, except when it came to remembering to feed their virtual pets. Turns out, it’s been over 20 years since the first Tamagotchi was available in 1997. Most of those who owned, and likely forgot to feed, their little, digital creatures now have the chance to do it again. Last year was the 20thanniversary of the Tamagotchi and the reboot of the popular ‘90s toy!
The new Tamagotchi is still pocket-friendly, and just as stylish as you remember. This update also includes six additional colors, a smaller screen and a rectangular display as oppose to a circular one. The price is still about the same, $14.99, on Amazon.
This new version was inspired by the Tamagotchi app that was released in 2013. According to the Huffington Post, the app was downloaded more than 2.5 million times within 90 days of its release. So, what made them so successful and why are they making a comeback?
For one, nostalgia. Just as Converse, overalls and hair scrunchies have made their comebacks, we like to relive our childhood and commemorate what made us unconditionally happy in those days. The new toy mimics the ‘90s generation getting older. The virtual pet ages in this version if you forget to feed and take care of it, growing weaker if, ironically, you don’t keep it young with food.
While toy makers usually find that games like these, ones that focus on taking care of a baby or pet are more successful with girls, the Tamagotchi was successful with most kids: a toy maker’s dream. This is something game makers continue to battle with today.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the Japanese product generated up to $82 million in sales since the release. This was the beginning of mobile gaming, the ‘90s kid version of what a game on an iPhone is today. In some ways, it taught the ‘90s generation responsibility when their pet needed to be fed and picked up after, not to mention the constant beeping when it needed you.
