Mobile Job Seeking: What You Need to Know

Several generations of both employers and employees all have something in common: they’ve been through the daunting hiring process. With the rise of technological integration in the workforce, smartphones have revolutionized the process of job seeking and hiring. Not only can you search for the exact job you want using Google, LinkedIn, or other job databases, but you can also immediately contact the company or recruiter and ask if they’re hiring. While smartphones do make this process easier, they also make the job market much more competitive because everyone has the easy accessibility to job information.

A study by the Pew Research Center found that 77% of adults in the U.S. own a smartphone. The stereotype of millennials regularly keeping up with their phones is supported by the fact that 92% of 18-29 years own smartphones, and 78% of them use their mobile device to search for a job. However, the ones who are verbal about this stereotype aren’t that far behind. In fact, Baby Boomers have shown the biggest increase of all generations in those who search for work using a smartphone.

This increase in mobile job seeking could be due to the surge of remotely offered jobs, made possible because of technology like mobile devices. The more remote your job is or the job you’d like to have, the more likely you are to search for one on the go.

Not only can hopeful, future employees easily find a company’s job listing, they can also look up current employees, salaries, interview questions and even tips. For an employer, this can be both an advantage and disadvantage. While a great website and great company reviews can most certainly intrigue job seekers, a site that is not optimized for mobile can discourage them from applying.

For many people, a smartphone is their only source of internet. So, without a site that is also mobile friendly, it can be a hassle for some to apply. A survey by Glassdoor.com found that one in four job seekers would not apply to a job if the company’s career site is not mobile optimized

Another important aspect of the mobile job hunt is the fact that many use social media accounts to search as well. Having a strong social presence can attract a future generation of workers. The survey by Glassdoor also found that 64% of candidates check a company’s social media channels an hour before they interview. Therefore, more than half of interviewees are checking up on a company’s LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc. This is especially important to know as a smaller business competing with bigger businesses who have more employees dedicated to maintaining social channels.

Additionally, employers are searching for employees using social channels, and therefore, likely on a mobile device. A job seeker’s digital presence can also be an advantage and disadvantage. An advantage if you appear to be professional, also with an optimized for mobile website and virtual portfolio, but a disadvantage if you’re nonexistent on these platforms or even post unprofessional content inappropriate for others to see. This is dangerous for millennials who have had a social presence since before they graduated high school, making it only that more competitive.

Social media is no longer a pastime or hobby; it is a direct reflection of who you are and your professional capability. According to a Work Trends study done by Adecco in 2015, the likelihood of being contacted by a recruiter increases with the number of social media networks in use. By being active on one network, the probability a recruiter will reach out is 16%, and it increases to 46% when five of the main platforms are in use.

 

The popularity of mobile job seeking is rising across generations and occupations. There is no question that this form of employment will become the most utilized resource, subsequently increasing the amount of jobs that can be done from home and on the go.
